THE LEAGUE OF FRIENDS... was formed in 1965 to befriend the Hospital and provide comforts for patients and staff. The Friends have raised funds for such items as furnishing, flowers, televisions, newspapers and redecoration, and larger projects have included purchase of specialist equipment and the building of a new reception area and physiotherapy department. The Friends fund the post of Voluntary Services Organiser, and volunteers support a range of services, including administration and hospitality. The League holds an open Annual General Meeting, and its work is managed by a small Committee which meets frequently. A Community Car is kept at the hospital, operating under the umbrella of the League of Friends, and is driven by volunteers. It can carry a wheelchair and is used to drive patients with mobility problems to and from medical appointments. It can also be used by elderly and disabled people for social outings. As health service budgets remain under enormous pressure, the hospital is turning more and more to its Friends, for support both financially and in donations of time. As a Friend, you can support the Hospital by: Fundraising - the Hospital will always need help with recurring costs as well as with large capital projects, which means that a predictable income is essential.
